This is really a licensing issue and not a technical issue. You need to call the licensing center and get their help. As the other posts state, though slightly incorrectly, you cannot use a Standard Activation key on a Datacenter installation.

The key here is that it is an issue with the activation key, not the license. The license is simply a piece of paper. The Activation key is what get entered into the operating system. You can transfer the license from one physical machine to another physical machine once every 90 days.

You keep track of which licenses are assigned to which physical boxes with a spreadsheet. I am not a lawyer and do not play one on TV. Your best resource is to talk with Microsoft and explain your situation. But, since there is no functional difference between Standard and Datacenter, it seems to me like you can transfer licenses and be okay. But only Microsoft can tell you that.
