Nikon Camera Control Pro Download ( Latest)

Anyway as I said you have zero experience shooting with fractional shutter speeds.. Thoughts R Us – ‘”But here is an unsubstantiated claim of yours: ” the many pros using the a1, many times more than R3 users,”‘.
Mikeran That’s fine, I was not expecting an apology, you have demonstrated with utmost clarity that such manners aren’t part of your DNA. MILCman: yes, you are correct about that remark about the A1 vs R3 relative sales; that was another commenter.
How else do they actually create it? You are embarrassing yourself again. Thoughts R Us – “yes, you are correct about that remark about the A1 vs R3 relative sales; that was another commenter”. Thoughts R Us – “if Canon brought a camera to the market with that feature, they have the IP for that”. MILCman: “so what happened to your claim that “they[canon] rely on tech developed by their medical imaging group”? You moved the goalposts. You first asked me to furnish proof of patents, which I did.
Now you object because it doesn’t mention the medical tech group. But the article by Canon clearly lays this out. Newflash: Canon doesn’t publish patents and other articles to just please you. And you can do your own research. Bottom line: Canon has unique eye control AF tech, developed in conjunction with their medical tech group.
Deal with it. Why is that a bad thing? You should be happy that Canon has this innovation and it may spur others like Sony to get onboard. All 3 of you are acting like children. Come on. Turn the light off and put your phones away. What I find questionable is them releasing it with a full awareness that the feature just doesn’t work for some important categories of users light colored eyed people, glasses users, In the past 15 years Canon has tuned into a super conservative company with little innovations, but we at least expect what they release to work.
This isn’t the case this time around. Like a fingerprint for eyes, these images enable doctors and opticians to diagnose problems, but the information gained has also given Canon’s Photo Division a better understanding of what eyes look like. In turn, this has informed the development of Eye Control AF. Canon goes on to say “there’s a 7,pixel scanner dedicated to acquiring Purkinje images of the eye. These images enable the camera to understand the position of the user’s eye and the direction it’s looking in.
Auto detection is useless: WHAT? In the unlikely event that an R3 user encounters irregular frequencies, the Z9 has no mechanical shutter and the R1 is limited to 10fps vs. Please refer to the movie recording section starting at page of the R3 advanced users manual. Under “Tab Menus: Movie Recording – Shooting 3 there is a link to HF anti-flicker shooting, which takes you to the instructions on how to set that up, including the auto-detect note the set up is the same in both stills and video modes.
Of course you could have just believed it, like any reasonable person would, when an actual R3 user told you it can auto-detect in video mode and supplied a screen shot showing a fractional shutter speed in that mode, but then again, your posting history shows you to be anything but reasonable when discussing Canon cameras.
Never said auto was useless. Just that manual was good enough in most cases. You may want to brush up your reading skills before calling comments ignorant, 2. One R3 users unable to make eye focusing AF work out of how many?
The reality is that there are many reports online about eye AF calibration just not working at all. This was also reported by DPreview. Just gotta protect his favorite brand. Mikeran You calling anybody else a fb is hilarious beyond belief.
Who is the Sony owner roaming endlessly every Z9 thread? Leveraging every available opportunity to spread FUD about the camera you perceive as threatening your a1? As a former a9II user I am familiar with fractional shutter speeds and their value to limit led issues. I actually do this for a living and now I see one or more photographers with an R3 each month and talk with them. So yeah, I see them often and share experiences with other photographers.
Did I tell this person they were ignorant? I told them to take the camera home and set it up and he might be surprised how quickly he may become comfortable using it and how easy it is to disable. It will be interesting to see how these perform.
The flicker reduction is welcome! I am very disappointed to learn that there were no HSS improvements, which is a much bigger concern to me. When using HSS with many different units, primarily Godox and Flashpoint, banding rears its ugly head.
I get banding at the bottom when i forget to turn on hss on the godox trigger remote. Or are you talking about something else.
Dont have a z9. Not much different than a high frequency flickering LED light. Will be curious to test this out now. Interesting, I turned on silent mode on the z7ii full electronic shutter and the flash and trigger won’t even fire. Won’t take photos. The electronic front current does, but I guess the rear is mech. First thing he tested. Seem to look fine. I think it depends on the strobe and it depends on the power. Spectro – No, this is extremely widely reported and the video you posted isn’t the situation in which the problem arises.
It happens when the flash is on the hotshoe. LOL, nice try But since you are asking, Nikon is not always hugely inferior to anything from Sony. Just a little behind, but catching up. Did not the Sony A1 just get a fw update that included af improvements?
SHould we infer the same? If you want to check out my galleries you will notice that at least half of my pictures are taken with Nikon equipment.
Plenty good enough for me! RaindropDroptop: I did not make a statement, I asked a question! I did not bring Sony into this conversation, TomCody did and now you! If you are not familiar with those I advise reading about the Toyota production system and six sigmas.
That does say absolutely nothing about the Z9 not already being the best focusing camera as of fm2. Though they also said the Z9 is a Sony.
But they are the exception. Most every other channel seems to have a more nuanced opinion, in that while there are differences between Canikony, the general AF performance level of their flagships is comparable.
See, this ability is the reason I shoot Sony and this ability is the reason to annoy you to no end. Now please go back to state again that the Z9 has a lead on Sony A1. If you repeat it a couple more times you may even believe it yourself. The A1 and I did not get on at all well together so I sold it. Creep up on the A1? The only thing that Sony objectively has on Canon and Nikon mirrorless is their lens line-up, which is a significant advantage for the moment.
But if considering only bodies A1 vs The Sony lenses line up is indeed amazing and now fully benefits both Sony and Nikon users than to the great Magadap adapter. The level of AF performance is really excellent and totally usable even for critical applications. There are more and more Sony shooters adding Z9 to their line up, including guys shooting with the mm f2. Overall they are impressed. Nikon deserves respect. They have developed a reliable lens lineup and high-end mirrorless technology quickly.
Yes, there’s more Nikon needs to deliver, but in the next years Nikon mirrorless will be a solid lineup. As an engineer myself, I know how much time it takes for research and new product development, testing etc.
It’s a little bit tiresome that you still continue to have adverts suggesting that you can buy these high-end cameras from Amazon for half the advertised price elsewhere. I’m not sure – isn’t this illegal? Imagine browsing the internet in without an adblock. Ever since those banner ads on CNN and other media sites spread a virus back in the mid s everything’s been blocked.
There is a reason why your company blocks all the ads when you browse from a company machine and it’s not because “they’re annoying”. It’s because they’re dangerous.
I have an adblock of course. However, I think Amazon’s relationship with this site means that their ads are an integral part of the script of the page or some such – can you tell I’m not a programmer?? Which, of course, I can’t. No one cares here though as the same thing has been going on for years. Of course, there are worse things happening in the world, but it is still nonetheless a little bit irritating. Where are the comments morning that these things should have been there from the start and anyone who bought the camera are beta testers?
Is that not a thing any more? Yes, the z9 camera was rushed to market, no doubt about it. However, give them a break. What a not very intelligent take, to be polite. These cameras are nearly as much computers than a camera, even more so with the mirroless camera and their software base autofocus. And as seen in all That’s why Console games etc just get better. Before we had cameras which barely get better features, you want XYZ, just buy the next camera.
Now we are nearly getting a S model for free,. Do we not know whoever buys brand new release camera are all beta tester? I am a happy Z9 beta tester, just wish I can be at a high ranking in the testing line. In the past I’ve seen those comments around firmware releases especially Fujifilm.
I’ve been beta testing the Z9 for 6 months now. Updates are always welcome, but it’s been a beast since day 1. Fuji’s reputation, yes, was to release half baked products. Nikon’s reputation, previous to the Z’s, was to make an entirely new camera with LESS changes than what we are seeing in these same body firmware updates.
It seems Nikon, the entity, got a firmware update too when they released the Z system. This is why the Mark Pain article was so important, thank you dpreview. It highlighted some of the downsides of the camera, and definitely contributed to pushing Nikon to issue an update to deal with the banding issue.
A great update for Nikon users. I can see Nikon is really taking this camera seriously. I am not a nikon shooter but can say z9 could possibly be the best overall camera for money at high end range.
A little birdie has told me that firmware V3 is coming and with it RED dissapears from litigation. Hubblefunk, firmware isn’t magic. There are always hardware limitations. I seriously doubt any actual improvements for the z6 II or z7II from firmware will ever be coming. They may add a video mode or something, but the AF and general speed of processing can’t just magically keep getting better with firmware changes, there is always a hardware limit.
Very impressive. This type of continuing product support is how you build long standing customers. It can be many reasons, from protecting their flagships sales to not having enough resources to keep updating both at the same rate. We’re just guessing, after all Now the original Z7 still got an AF update last automn, which is more support than most camera are getting.
I think it’s fine if they focus on Z9. They need that one to be successful, so that they can deliver a good Z7 III later on. PS: I think most people here know firmware is not magic.
An algorithm can be adapted to other hardware than the one it was designed for. It might run slower, why not give user the choice like the low light AF option? Multiple expo in NEF 2. Focus shift combined into one NEF 3.
Clean HDMI out in still mode 4. Allow a function button to toggle between two or more AF modes. Smaller interval between long expose timing 6. Let us change the size of the AF-C tracking box. Apply the Z9 menu layout Show ‘no card’ on top LCD Add clear display to the display button options, it’s wasted on a function button. The ability to create up to 10 user profiles, and assign up to 3 to the three User modes on the camera sort of like how Fuji does on some of their cameras.
The ability to save the camera’s “state” and store it on the card. These are areas other than AF that Nikon could look to improve. ANy number of these would be welcome. I’m just happy to see ZRAW not pulled.
AF was already working great for my needs — only nice-to-have is AF feels not a sticky as the R3 when shooting, but I’m very happy with results when it comes time review the images — similar to what granger said in one of his videos. Yet they made the system to what it is today. No bug fixing and nothing in it for them despite all the promises of how fast the processor in the Z II series was and how they could extent its feature set.
I don’t remember Nikon promised future firmware updates for Z6ii. Can you send me a link of that marketing material? Its been said in the beginning when they just came out. But of course do with it what you want. You don’t have to take my word, like I don’t take the word of Nikon no longer. You mean those poor AF bugfixes.
But nothing that is related to the use of the camera. We are still at a poor v1. You of course may be pleased with what Nikon offers you. Me not, I find their service updates pretty poor compared to my previous camera system. And yeah, with fe. Sony you’re lucky to have any meaningful FW update ever for a whole product lifetime. Good for you putting salt on the wording. You know what I mean, but refuse to admit that Nikon is doing a poor job.
Just because you have been brainwashed in your believe of the brand and your loyalty to the brand – Normal people call that brand loyalists whom can’t witstand any wrong wording to their beloved brand as they then feel hurt in their self esteem..
Time will make you see with less of the pink glasses you are currently wearing. In reality Nikon has been one of the most active camera makers regarding FW updates.
Good luck with some other brands. What you say “brainwashed” is the result of using several cameras from several brands Canon, Sony, Nikon. Except for all the bugfixing firmware updates we got in the meantime..
It’s not as much as I’d like, but it’s also a very far cry from “none”. Just because the II’s have two of them, doesn’t mean the camera is twice as fast. Just like 9 women can’t deliver a baby a month. Nikon promised 4k60 in a firmware update and delivered.
They really didn’t promise anything beyond that. The usual ridiculous hyperbole and brand bashing that is the norm on here. Nikon is focusing on its top of the range pro camera, which makes sense. So stop wailing or sell your gear and go to a different brand. I bet the experience would be no better and likely worse.
Aerilenn “Just like 9 women can’t deliver a baby a month. Even two babies a month if all have twins ;-. I’ve got a Z7, it’s now the last Nikon I own and I don’t remember having major issues or hearing of promises for firmware updates. I recall a lot of speculation and wishful thinking among users, that this would be possible, but that’s another story. Name That Camera 7 firmware updates. That is a firmware every 3 month. Aerilenn Actually Aerilenn, 9 women can have a baby every months.
The first in January, the second in February etc. Then the first woman can have a baby again in October and so on. Guess I didn’t spell it clearly enough, so here it is again: You can’t make a baby with nine women in one month. Everyone that’s heard it before would have known what I’m meaning, despite my ambiguous wording.
You have a 4th gen mirrorless vs a first gen. Expected results I’d say. But I bet the Z 7 I is better than the 7r2, possibly 7r3. We understood the meaning of your wording the first time around m8, but that was never the point, now was it? You could impregnate all nine in a month; then all nine could give birth in the same month. Yes they updated the original Z7 last November with AF improvements. Remind me again which manufacturer updated a 3 year old camera for something else than bug fixes?
Nikon need to introduce a Z6iii pretty soon and or update the Z6ii to version 2. The Canon R5 is now leaving them behind in sales. I am sure Nikon is aware of this. They also need a Z8, and a Z5ii and a Z70 or Z Unfortunately I prefer my now gone 7R2 to the Z7 also, I bought the Z7 to use my Nikon glass with less hassle than adapting them to my E mount bodies.
As someone who went from A7r2 to Z7 I’d be interested in hearing what you’re missing from the A7r2. I found, but this could be because I ‘left’ Nikon for the 7R2 from the D8xx bodies and got used to the functionality, that the FN menu and customisable buttons inc.
The Z7 felt clunky but I got it immediately and never upgraded firmware. The 7R2 was also cheaper and had more third party support, the sensor was brilliant, I regularly used the apps, especially Smooth Reflections and video was ‘better’ imo.
I don’t shoot sports or people running around and I realize everyone wants perfect smartphone AF which is nice. I have been able to shoot what I want and know how to map buttons and AF modes. It’s not perfect, but has improved significantly since they provided multiple updates. Since you asked explicitly. Good nikon! Two last firmware had a tralla Nicke new guruers, Comparing to Sony a1 that seems to almost be abandoned.
The A1 simply has this feature already – Nikon had to ship it in an update. Do you prefer the latter over the former and call that better support?!? The A1 has more reliable AF before this update and already has Ho frequency flicker.
Also A1 just got a couple new features a few weeks ago. Actually, MikeRan , it was a Sony user who brought it up. You made a very nice comment up top, a pleasant suprise. Let’s leave it at that and not go down the rabbit hole of irrelevant comparrisons. Both systems are great and quite capable.
The rest boil down to personal preference. I have consistently been very positive on the Z9. No idea what the guy meant……. MikeRan But, you just brought up Sony in a really defensive way, hahaha. Checks gear list – oh you are a Sony fan boy. Enjoy Sony and relax! Yes I defended Sony against a comment that Sony has abandoned the A1. But a firmware update for the A1 bringing two new features was released only a few weeks ago.
So yeah. Even the EOS R3 implementation is far from flawless but Nikon and Sony should at least adapt that level of automation. What automation? R3 suggests the nearest shutter speed required to eliminate the flicker, then you have to accept the suggestion.
You have to fine tune it yourself. Edit2: Nikon also only allows it in M or S modes, but without clean multiples. Still suggesting a specific speed and asking you to press Yes, then press Ok, is stupid UX.
It should be full auto. Have you guys ever used the R3? I guess not. Yes the automation gives you a shutter speed that you can accept, but thats not « and thats it ». Theres a prompt to also switch to TV mode wich will then you let change the shutter speed to any multiplication of the original suggestion in case it was too slow or too fast.
Simply speaking, it let you choose every other « banding free » shutter speeds for the calculated led frequency. Its simply brilliant simple and effective. I do not think it is too complex to choose the right shutter speed. Of course automated would have been better. Alam12 – “I believe that’s the big ss Panel on stadium, why would one aim their lens up there when star players playing below”.
They used masked pixel, not dual pixel, and still manage to extract more data from that to improve the AF. I wonder what they can do with dual or quad pixel in future. Not sure they would read out more pixels even if they had dual pixels AF. Also with masking you can do more things than just with regular dual pixels. But I doub they gonna increase the AF pixels count much. Seems like that is more than enough for AF.
Z9 already does p readout and AF calculations per second. They may go in the next flagship. Weird, did remember the 60p controversy at launch.
But sounds like the z9 was always capable of fps AF, just not of p viewfinder. I cannot edit the older posts. But even with that knowledge the main discussion point still stands. Just at another framerate. Having dual pixels doesn’t mean you read out more pixels per AF cylce.
Beavertown – It actually performs better than Sony and that has been confirmed and proven by so many already, that your try to downplay its AF performance is pretty poor.
Respected wildlife photographers like Steve Perry have said that the A1 still has an edge when it comes to tracking BIF. So impoverishments are good. And you can hear him say it in this Nikon guys youtube channel, in which Perry was a guest. The downside is you have to choose specific shutter speed manually. There is no auto for high frequency flicker reduction. Yep, manually searching for the perfect granular shutter speed is « how it should be ».
Nevermind automatically finding it in 1sec and save time not fiddling around with trial an error. Having both options is definitely how it should be. Canon is the only one that has it.
I wish Sony had it, and no doubt the Nikon guys who actually use fine tune will wish Nikon did too. For me, the real question is whether the dual path readout one for image capture and one for EVF still enables the real-time view of the banding in the EVF.
I can say with certainty when you half press the shutter on the A1, the banding is previewed and you know right away if you have a problem. Talking to former coworkers who are still in the biz, the flicker thing was a big issue shooting sports. Not just sports, also corporate events in venues with stage lights and projectors, I do ALOT of theses and why having the camera calculates is incredibly valuable. Not everyone use the same stage lights etc. Any kind of stage lighting could potentially contain LED lighting that flickers.
You could have several different LEDs flickering at non standard frequencies, only way to mitigate is to sync with the fastest flicker in the scene or use a global shutter sensor. I shot a stage production with Hz flickering lights in one part of the set and Hz in another.
I had to choose to null one or the other based on where I was shooting if both lights were on. I’m not in the loop with the D6, but as long as it has proper CFExpress functionality either natively or through updates I hardly see any need to update anything. With my old D5 I did not sit around long for any updates – the thing just worked. The mirrorless cameras are a bit different as it’s a younger and less mature technology, and is more pliable by design.
Take just a little thing like the viewfinder, with a mirrorbox prism you’re significantly more locked-in than with an LCD screen. I imagine a lot of the other components suffer a similar fate, with more locked-in and specialized hardware with only so much room for firmware adjustments.
A lot of cameras excel at photography or video, but what if you need a camera equally capable at both? Chris and Jordan rank the best hybrid mirrorless cameras.

Thoughts R Us Without commenting on this specific feature, I find it interesting that these day someone will come across a random video on YouTube and just take it as gospel truth. What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve? DarkShift archerscreek There is plenty of images shot with Z9 under artificial lighting in sport venues etc.
M Lammerse Is it? Early adapters can often also be described as beta testers PNad Yep like that hz evf update. Thoughts R Us What’s funny is that some people will have this cynical take on the work of large corporations, highly trained engineers, a highly evolved product development methodology, but then we also have people on this forum MikeRan It’s true. TRU is still the Sony king. JPM29 MikeRan, you are funny you compare key features like Focus and anti Flicker with 8 K wich is unsuable, I guess you never try to sell videos over the word.
MikeRan Haha your outrage over other peoples use of 8K is hilarious. MikeRan Where did I write A1 is the best? You are delusional. JPM29 Good, now we will remember that MikeRan You will forget. No doubt. MikeRan crickets Raul Still jumping focus Sad. Z9 is basically the top flag ship now.
Jumping focus site sources please. Also, how does it compare to a DSLR? I think mirrorless is superior for AF. Joe Tam I heard the z6i and ii af was really unreliable. Flowchart to be fair, wouldn’t they need to re-compare each time any of the cameras upgraded their firmware? Thoughts R Us That is actually an excellent point. MikeRan Perhaps there is some value in getting it right the first time. Good for nikon and its users and anything added is welcome. MikeRan I agree releasing new features is always welcomed.
MikeRan Anyway in the end the manufacturers have to balance the market timing with the readiness of the product and release a good enough product early enough to catch the market window however you want to define that but with a good enough product to avoid a black mark. Not easy. Thoughts R Us It seems like we have someone commenting on features on cameras and cards that they have never used, vs real world users of the product.
MILC man Darkshift – failing to address what people post is disingenuous, and it doesn’t reinforce whatever point you think you are making. Thoughts R Us Wow Thoughts R Us zxaar: That’s a rather false assumption. Just show that they couldn’t meet their deadlines here. Nikon with the Z9 released the camera of the year in the eyes of most reviewers,” In the end it is just sony A1.
Richmondthefish Pentax is still king! But you are smarter Mike, don’t worry. As I said you proved his point so clearly. Auricom I demand D6 gets just as many fw updates as this one!! Richmondthefish and Nikon demands you buy a new camera! What are you missing or not able to do with your D6? PNad Both Z9 and A1 use full manual only, the R3 is still the only camera that can automatically scans and also gives you multiples of that calculation. PNad « And it will be the same in many venues » And this where you are wrong, again telling a firm opinion without experience.
Also, auto scan vs trial and error can be enough time wasted to miss the shot. MILC man PNad – “Both Z9 and A1 use full manual only, the R3 is still the only camera that can automatically scans and also gives you multiples of that calculation” the r3 is not automatic because it does not automatically apply the shutter speed correction, and it’s range of autodetection is severely limited, to the point where it’s useless in real-world led stadium scenarios: “The [r3] detects PNad « to the point where it’s useless in real-world led stadium scenarios » Tell me how you never worked with the camera without telling me you never worked with that camera.
MILC man i’m talking actual facts here, as i proved with a link to the canon manual that you didn’t read. Thoughts R Us PNad: Of course the criticisms of the R3 for not having eye control AF for video are not really valid and show no understanding of real world video shooting. MILC man PNad: if eye control af works with video it isn’t going to be limited to just milc and just canon. MILC man you don’t have any idea what patents are involved here or who owns ’em, that’s just idle speculation.
MikeRan Deleted. MikeRan Canon had eye control for video in Anyway this is an article about a Nikon firmware upgrade. Thoughts R Us I do know that if you read the Canon website, they explain how they relied upon their medical device tech for eye control AF. But i domt thimk Canon Will Phase out ef-m serie because most people that buy a aps-c camera dont care About full frame cameras and Will never buy one.
We that do shoot with ff cameras and want one Crop for casual shootimg are a minority. I agree with johans81, EF-M is perfect at its price point, size and weight, etc Has anyone mentioned using all Canon AF lenses on Z mount? Could be fun! Ken Rockwell has it and is beta testing it. He has a video up using it with the z For stills it looks like it works perfect, and the IS works with it. I think it’s only the EOS R that does that: other manufacturers say that the shutter blades are easier to damage than the sensor cover glass.
I find the negative comments on the tilting screen a joke. Only vloggers need that functionality and makers of selfies. The screen can be tilted for overhead use, or for use on the ground or on the table or other platform. Nice for macro shots of insects, mushrooms, flowers, etc.
So elimination camera shake. Yeah, I have a fully articulating screen on my 77D, and it sits in the default position most of the time. The only extra I can think of is maybe that I can tilt it in a way that allows me to take macro pictures in a portrait aspect when close to the ground.
The Z50 looks like a decent camera, I’d love to try it for a weekend. I wanted to post a follow up, I have owned the z50 for a month. I have the z6, z, 50mm z, 85mm z, 2. The z50 feels like a smaller z6. The VR in the is as good as it gets, it is very stable in video also.
That lens is the size of a pancake prime, and sharp throughout its range. Auto focus is great, more than anyone would need, the battery life is good, the controls and grip are a pleasure to use all day.
Video is great, I switch to the neutral profile and it retains detail and gives a nice natural look. AF is great, it picks up eyes, video AF is on par with DPAF, tracking works great, choose the subject and it follows it all over the field of view.
IBIS and dual card slots would have been nice, but none of the competitors have those. USB C should have been included and they should have used the z6 battery. Snap bridge is terrible for remote photography but so is the Sony app.
If you haven’t already, check out the bluetooth remote that works with Z It has quite a bit of buttons and even a couple customizable functions. You have to get used to turning on after time out and stuff but it’s pretty handy.
I esp love hooking up the camera to TV and play slideshow to family and friends right away. You can even start video rec with it. There are cheap knock offs too but I have Nikon remote. I’m glad I got it. ML-L7 from Nikon. It’s a lot more than just a shutter release. It was originally made for P megazoom camera but it’s compatible with Z50 as well. Of course it can’t MF for you but you can move around the focus point and zoom in for the focus aid with the remote. I finally got a hands on with the Z50 in the store.
It’s very much a Nikon A6x Same shape and size, better ergonomics. It’s not that much smaller than the D though. It’s only the slimmer kit lens that makes the difference. And those S lenses are expensive! That’s D sensor we’re talking about. Kit lens is small and sharp. That’s amazing low light capability, even at f3. I wish Nikon produced a stabilized 35mm f1.
I was liking this camera until I read it had no remote cable port, you have to use a smart phone. Bad decision in my opinion. No you don’t. Nikon makes a remote shutter release like they do for all their cameras. In fact, ML-L7 is the model number. The ML-L7 bluetooth remote works great. Its battery life is like years, lol. You can shoot photos, start and stop video record, and even has customizable buttons. Very nice and only available for Z50 among the Z cameras.
I personally have had trouble with an IR remote. One of the things a remote cable allows is to still prefocus where other methods do not. Actually I think they are the direct competitors plus the sony A A toy for instagram will not be supplied by a high level viewfinder. Nikon could do as canon and make the viewfinder an option as well as reduce the controls much more and put them on the rear screen. There is already a great option for instagram shooters that don’t need an EVF, the iPhone This is not targeted to the point and shoot users.
EVF is a reason to move to a dedicated camera. You can see in bright sunlight, and the third point add stability. Plus you don’t look like a 12 year old holding your cellphone out to take a snapshot. The review gives an impression that Z50 is not a serious camera and that it is intended to less serious people about photography than those considering the like of canon M6ii and Fujifilm X-T But in the same time consider them for comparison.
The comments do not match the score given at the end. When Nikon thanks to its lens mount design allows you to attach almost all lenses of the world previously produced It is the most flexible system for connecting everything around.
Why there is not even a trace of memories in a review about this fact? Yeah and nikon z already allows for sony e mount and canon eos lenses with af. Someone said theres not enough lenses for z mount? There were there first, that’s all. Canon did have adopters on M mount for long but their cameras are hardly exciting. Anyway the main point is other than only true nikon users for general public it is hard to be excited about something they can do for ages on other mounts.
Wasn’t the mount diameter main thing about this mount. Then by adopting lenses designed on smaller mount dia , aren’t you throwing away that advantages? I agree though, things like focus peaking made the Sony easy to use with manual lenses and by today’s standard it is old news.
And we can find lots of adapters for any system, but maybe there should be an article on the topic, to address the pros and cons for each mount. Another mediocre offering in an already crowded field. Yes, with your brilliant thinking, apple should stop making computers and smartphones, with android and windows its a crowded field. I think we should have less choices, hopefully we can just have one camera company.
Only having one choice drives down prices and pushes innovation. Plus with the terrible ergonomics of the a who could ask for any more. We don’t need a front dial, who even shoots manual. Also the added bonus of the Canon platform is the different mount, so when you want to move to full frame you get to repurchase all your lenses all over.
But once you own the camera, the only thing that matters is the grip, controls, EVF, things you interact with to take actual pictures. Suddenly owners that bought the M6II because of the megapixels, can’t see the screen in daylight and wished they had an EVF, or the a owners thought they needed the best EYE AF and realized there is no front dial, making shooting in full manual impossible.
Z50 is just another APS-C camera that is third rate compared to the competition. It’s easily outclassed by Nikon’s own D The Z line will not end well for Nikon. Wait and see.
Eventually, they won’t be able to give them away,. Ah, when you can’t support your argument, call the other person a troll. No matter, it won’t change the fact that the Z cameras are crap. It’s not trolling if it’s true. Sorry you wasted your money. Having a diverse choice is such a nightmare isn’t it.
I like the ‘Sony or even Canon’ so we can guess your heart lies with the former as the only choice we ever really need which of course is your choice. Just got my z50 few days ago with and FTZ. So far very impressed. AF is much better than expected and very reliable. Kit lens is sharp didn’t expect that either. Won’t replace my sigma , but it might be acceptable when weight is an issue outdoors, bicycle, skiing. Camera usability is better than d and d, which I had previously.
I dont need two card slots, vertical grips and other “holy grails” of modern camera thrashers. Reliable AF through the back screen for shooting kids at low angle is much more useful to me. Eye detect also works great. Ergonomics is better than the sony A-series and fuji x-t Overall, I like the camera. Looking forward to many nice shots. Competition is so fierce in this segment, making this a tough sell.
Absolutely, let’s just stop now while we are ahead. I’m sure they done care about size either. A survey of all the enthusiasts show they actually never want new features or cameras. I think Sony should drop out, with the Rebels and d3x the rim is so full. I know Nikon has smaller, non S-designation 28 and 40 mm lenses coming on their most recent roadmap, but that’s all I know. No aperture, no date, and certainly no price. For years I wanted Nikon to make an M5 and while they more or less have even the flip-down screen!
I’m not asking for much, just a 35 mm-e lens for my use, and let’s do a 50 mm-e and 24 mm-e for other folks since I’ve seen those requested, that are for DX-Z-mount specifically, meaning small and not very expensive. All reasonable points. For me I really try to avoid managing multiple systems because there are just too many benefits when using one system and one mount. I’m also interested in more information on the Z pancake prime lenses but in the meantime the Z50 kit lens is slow but otherwise looks great.
I can supplement a lens like that with one of the f1. I agree Clayton, I have the Z6 to replace my a because I didn’t want to deal with two systems and particularly the garbage or too-expensive long lenses. But now my priorities have changed. Very small, perfectly adequate AF and interface. The 28 mm is so unknown that I don’t want to wait. Interesting contrast, my experience compared to yours. I had an M early on and later both an M5 and M6, and got really tired of waiting for Canon to fill out the lens lineup.
IMHO , 22, and 32 were the only decent ones. And it’s a dead-end system. So that stuff is now gone. Just got a Z 50 to go along with my Z 6. Really like it. The is a “more than kit” quality lens. It’s also nice to have the same basic user interface on both cameras that I use. If they write the same scenario as the One series , not so many are going to invest into this body. They never never offered some good primes Today you can buy a Sony a7ii for less than this z That’s a great point bdbender, and I like what I keep seeing about the Z But I really like the idea of the little 22 mm so that’s really the reason I have the M5.
I took it out today with just the for photographing my toddler at the playground and I’m delighted. Very impressed by the touch-to-track-AF. I’m glad Nikon finally released the Z I just wish they’d released it last year or the year before. Atleast they have to give one or two Dx Z primes like 35mm or 50mm which really makes this camera small Nikon Z mount has a capability to take medium format sensor and one day we will see that sensor there,.
Why should I taken into account that this is Nikon’s first generation when other players have better offerings at this moment? For what it’s worth I thought I would post a few points about the Z50 that I like. It seems to be getting a lot of negative feedback here and I don’t think it’s entirely warranted. Yes the lenses are slow, and there is not much to choose from.
Yes the sensor is low-res compared to competition. But I have been using it for a little over a week and here are a few impressions I thought I would share. The video record time is longer than the Fuji cameras. The flip down screen is useful for a variety of reasons. The range of the two lenses is great for me as I do use the long telephoto range for shooting concerts and it works well with the stabilization.
The form factor is compact compared to the Fuji kits and yes the Fuji lenses are much better. The pop-up flash is handy and I find I do use it I wish I could angle it up like on some other cameras for indirect bounce flash, but can’t have everything. The AF is not best in class but respectable. I love the manual focus ring override. The focussing does struggle at times quite a bit but you get used to it and learn to work with it.
I am still experimenting. The video quality seems pretty decent, though I have not shot yet in 4K. So in general, it is not a class leading camera but I like it and have obtained good results.
I probably will upgrade at some point in the future, and I do love the Fuji cameras for their styling, film simulations, and direct physical controls I much prefer to turn an aperture ring than go into a menu to change aperture , but the Nikon is easy enough to control one-handed – it is light and all the controls are on the right hand side.
I probably will use just the kit lenses. I have old Nikon glass but they are from the film days and won’t be of much use on this camera. Actually a few points The folks that are bashing the Z50 are the usual suspects. The Z50 comes with the best kit lenses bar none in the industry The Z50, ergonomically, is the best feeling camera against all of it’s competitors The Z50 build and weather sealing is among the best and far better than the Sony, Canon, and Fuji offerings in it’s price point.
I am soooo delighted. I can carry it all day over the fells without suffering. It feels really good in the hand, the EVF is simply lush. Have to mention the IBIS, which is superb. Brilliant camera. I would love to get the Z6 but several factors hold me back. First, I do need a long telephoto reach so going full frame would mean heavy and expensive glass. Secondly, I find that even the prime lenses for the Z FF cameras are quite large so I worry about just not bringing the camera with me because of its size and weight.
I would also lose the flip screen and built-in flash. But Please try to convince me to get the Z6 as I have only a few days left to return the Z I like the Z It has achieved some really nice results, but I feel that I was nailing focus better with my old a, which is somewhere in the vicinity of 5 years old?
I am also not keen on the blackouts which I get unless shooting extended high with the electronic shutter. I am overall impressed but still somewhat undecided. Full Frame does attract me – I mean I grew up on Nikon film cameras so I was used to the format, and the manual control. You’re diving into menus on Z50 to change aperture? Have you considered just turning the front dial with your finger? With the camera to your eye, you’ll see the aperture value change in the viewfinder.
Yes you are absolutely right Deliverator. I have been looking at too many cameras and just writing off the cuff. Both the Fuji and the Nikon require a two-step process to change the aperture – on the Fuji to toggle the switch on the lens, and then turn the ring, and on the Nikon to change the mode dial and then use the command dial to change the aperture.
Of course if you are already in A mode, then the Nikon is faster to change in only one step. My apologies. And likewise on the Fuji if the switch on the lens is already set to aperture not auto then it is also a one step process.
No worries, Upper Structures. In fact, if you’ve turned on Easy Exposure Compensation with the Nikon in A mode, you can adjust the aperture with the front dial and exposure compensation via the rear dial. It is very intuitive and quick. Thanks for the tip. As a further comment I would say that I compared the grip of the Z50 to the non -grip of the Fuji XT3 snd XT30 and I found the Fujis extremely awkward to use and near impossible using only one hand.
I realize there is an optional grips available but I am rying to keep things compact and light. I don’t mind them using a 20 MP sensor. That means better performance in low light due to the larger pixel pitch. People using this camera arguably need it more because they might be more video-oriented or more likely to use the camera handheld. On the plus side, it’s weather-sealed, which is more than you can say for something like the Canon M50 or Sony a I get that they’re trying to appeal to people who want to take selfies with the flip-down screen, but that doesn’t work if you mount the camera on a tripod or monopod for more traditional video work or even vlogging with a Gorillapod, etc.
The selfie is a phone thing, not an ILC thing. The lack of ibis is head scratching, really?? You do realize 1. The Z50 costs less than half of a Z6, and that ibis is expensive to produce?? Oiche You’re shooting with a Pentax K70 and laughing at a Z50? The Z50 sensor is the same one being used in the class leading D, funny how no one has ever complained about the sensor on the D The kit lenses that are included are by far the best sharpness, contrast, AF, edge to edge detail of any of it’s competitors.
The only folks dissing the Z50 are folks that have never handled or shot this camera That oversize mount still has advantages in that the rear of the lens can be closer to the sensor increasing the image quality.
The camera is targeted at people who will be marketed two OIS lenses. Why would you blow up the cost of this camera with IBIS??? So many people just assume they know more without knowing anything. Have you developed a product in your entire life? I seriously doubt If you look at Nikon’s financial performance, you will know why a camera like the Z50 has very little to offer.
There are so many fine alternatives you can choose from – so why buy a Z As some of you have commented, why is the kit lens so slow? Despite using the big full frame Z mount, the Z50’s kit lens is artificially restricted in size. Nikon has missed yet another opportunity to make a winning camera like the D The Z50 has been barely out yet – therefore its sales haven’t impacted Nikon’s last reported financial stats.
What in the world does “artificially restricted in size” mean? Do you mean that Nikon could have made a bigger lens but they chose not to? I believe the lens is one of the reasons that the Z50 seems to be selling well so far. Leading all cameras. I guess you define “missed opportunity” differently from most people.
I think this Nikon Z50 actually deserves an even better score. It has great handling and it’s fun to use it. The images have a special feel at least for me. I can’t compare it with the Olympic myself and I’m sure it is a good camera. But in the end it should be more then just comparing technical specs,. The Z50 to me just feels right. Personally, I am disappointed with the initial release and don’t regret moving to Fuji.
IBIS zealots? Being a Pentaxian I am just so used to it as they have put IBIS as a standard feature in every single body for such a long time now. IBIS is essential, it is brilliant for me as a landscaper, it is just as standard to me as a shutter button and I just can’t fathom a fairly expensive camera being released in not having it BUT like I say I have used it from as it is standard feature in Pentax.
For the Pentaxian a camera without IBIS would be like a car without power steering, we are just so used to having it. If you don’t need IBIS for your photography then fair enough, horses for courses!
